"Great design speaks for itself"

Scope

The Scope of the site is where we do a lot of planning. Here we will plan the "Who?", "What?", "When?," "Where?", "Why?," and "How?". The important questions to ask during this phase of the design process is questions such as "Who is the Company we are making this site for?" and "Why are we making the site?" or "Who will come to the site? (aka our target audience) and what would they want from a site like this?." By doing this first we are sure to make a HIGHLY useful site for the user and define what were really trying to do.

Site Structure

It's all about being ORGANIZED!!. In this step we plan the website structure, this is also known as information design ( "How is the visitor going to get to the information they want?") We make an outline of how a visitor would navigate through the site. We "chunk" information into sections that are connected to one another. We establish naming and folder structures for the site ( what the files will be called). And finally a site map is created (see image below).

Page Structure

MORE ORGANIZATION!!. In this step we start to design how the site will appear to the user, not graphics and such....not yet!! Here we want to make something called a "Wire Frame." A wire frame allows us to do a visual layout of useful information and how that information will be displayed on the web page. It can also be useful to organize interaction between a visitor and the website such as where a link to the next page should go, or where a graphic should be placed.

GUI / Surface Design

Here is the section for all of you that love Photoshop! This is were a site puts on it "bling." Many times a graphic designer will be heavily involved during this phase. Graphics are made, colors are chosen, and more. Layout is added to the page if needed. During my process before I go and create the final design with a program like Photoshop I will start with a pencil and paper. Many different ideas come to mind and like writing a paper it can go through many revisions.

Build site

Here is where the mad coding skills come into play. After the surface is designed the design is taken and developed with code. For this site XHTML and CSS was used. If the site requires more interaction between the user and the website Javascript or other server side languages like Ajax can be used.

Publish site

After the site has gone through its development phase its ready to go live!! All of the files that were used to make the site, all the images, and the code is taken from the computer and "uploaded" to a server. This process is done by an "FTP" client - basically its a just a way to send all of your stuff to a server on the Internet where every one can see it. From there your set. You have an amazing website that you can reach the world and the world can get to you.
